<p><strong>Today I am super excited to talk about one of my favorite topics&#8211; AUDIOBOOKS!</strong></p>
<p>I often share here on the blog, on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/thispilgrimlife" target="_blank" rel="false noopener noreferrer">Instagram</a>, and on <a href="http://www.facebook.com/thispilgrimlife" target="_blank" rel="false noopener noreferrer">Facebook</a> about audiobooks we are loving and how they are making our lives richer.  Audiobooks have even saved my life on occasion&#8211; picture a dark highway, a sleepy driver, and the <a href="https://amzn.to/2XbrV3C" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">laugh-out-loud humor of Jim Gaffigan</a> to the rescue.</p>
<p>We listen to audiobooks nearly everyday. For us, <strong>audiobooks mean more wonderful stories, fewer videos, and multi-tasking with happier kids.</strong></p>
<p>Everyone in our family enjoys audiobooks at different times and in different ways, every single day. Keep reading and I&#8217;ll share</p>
<ul>
<li>how and when we listen</li>
<li>Audible and why I think it&#8217;s a worthwhile investment</li>
<li>how to get audiobooks for free</li>
<li>a huge list of audiobooks divided into easy to follow categories</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Be sure to save this list for future reference, and please share some of your family&#8217;s favorite audiobooks in the comments! </strong></p>
<h2>Huge List of Favorite Audiobooks for the Whole Family</h2>
<p><img decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-11585 alignnone" src="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Homeschool-Hygge.jpg" alt="" width="700" height="933" srcset="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Homeschool-Hygge.jpg 700w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Homeschool-Hygge-600x800.jpg 600w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Homeschool-Hygge-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></p>
<h3><strong>WHEN WE LISTEN</strong></h3>
<ul>
<li><strong>In the car.</strong> One of the best times to listen due to the captive audience.</li>
<li><strong>During school time.</strong> We often turn on an audiobook while the kids do handwriting, <a href="https://thispilgrimlife.com/watercolor-supplies/">watercolors</a>, or other <a href="https://thispilgrimlife.com/how-to-keep-toddlers-busy/">quiet play</a> at the table.</li>
<li><strong>While I cook.</strong> One of the easiest ways to keep my kids from acting insane during dinner prep is to turn on an audiobook and let them draw or play quietly nearby.</li>
<li><strong>As we do chores.</strong> We can knock out folding several loads of laundry together or clean up a bedroom with an audiobook playing in the background.</li>
<li><strong>During independent play time</strong>. The kids like to listen to books in their room through our <a href="https://amzn.to/3bV76ir" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Echo Dot</a> while they build legos, or downstairs in the basement while they whittle or play.</li>
<li><strong>At bedtime</strong>. My husband listens to an audiobook every night as he goes to sleep, and we also always play a story in the boys room at bedtime to help them settle down.</li>
<li><strong>In our wireless headphones</strong>. My husband and I both have <a href="https://amzn.to/2LSukLg" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">wireless bluetooth headphones</a> that make it really easy to listen to our own books while we go about different parts of our day.</li>
</ul>
<h3><strong>A LITTLE ABOUT AUDIBLE&#8230;</strong></h3>
<p><strong>I am a very enthusiastic member of Audible, and I will tell you a little bit more of why that is in a moment. I know that there are free audiobooks available, but for a number of reasons (see below), I prefer to <a href="https://amzn.to/3e8Jc4j" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">subscribe to Audible</a></strong>. In fact, I&#8217;ve been an Audible member for several years now, and consequently we&#8217;ve built a great audiobook library!</p>
<p>I&#8217;m going to be really up front and say that, <strong>yes, I am trying to convince you that an Audible membership is worth it!</strong> I wouldn&#8217;t write so much about it if I did not truly think it worthwhile.</p>
<p>But, I also want to be clear that <strong>you can still benefit from this list and even from Audible&#8217;s books without being a member.</strong> <strong>The app is free to use and you can purchase books without a subscription</strong>. Many books are less than $5 (I&#8217;ve noted those in the list), and books are always going on sale.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><b>What is Audible?</b></span></p>
<p>Audible is a subscription service in which you pay a monthly fee and in return receive credits for books each month, as well as a 30% discount on any additional books you purchase and access to free Audible originals. The books you download are yours to keep, no matter when you cancel your membership.</p>
<p><strong>You can <a href="https://amzn.to/3e8Jc4j" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">sign up</a> and receive two audiobooks for free, with no requirement to keep your membership.  </strong></p>
<p><a href="https://amzn.to/3e8Jc4j" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-12764 size-full" src="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/audible.jpg" alt="" width="700" height="360" srcset="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/audible.jpg 700w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/audible-600x309.jpg 600w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/audible-300x154.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></a></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Benefits of Using Audible</strong>:</span></p>
<ol>
<li><strong>You own the books</strong>. You are paying for the books through your monthly fee, so any book you choose is yours to keep. Even if/after you cancel your subscription, the books are still yours and will remain available in the Audible app.</li>
<li><strong>The selection is the biggest and best. </strong>This is perhaps one of the biggest advantages of Audible over other free services. Audible&#8217;s audiobook collection is HUGE, and the narrators are (generally) really great. If there&#8217;s a book you are looking for, chances are good that it&#8217;s available as an audiobook on Audible.</li>
<li><strong>You can &#8220;shop around&#8221; for narrators. </strong>Many titles have more than one version, meaning you can use the preview option to select a narrator you prefer. This is a big benefit because a narrator can make or break a story.</li>
<li><strong>Easy and convenient. </strong>This is a personal favorite benefit simply because I just don&#8217;t have a lot of extra time on my hands to be looking for audiobooks or remembering to request them in time. I love how easy Audible is to use, how user-friendly the app is, and how quickly I can download a book.</li>
<li><strong>Building a listening library</strong>. This goes back to the first benefit, but when you buy an Audible book, it is added to your library to keep. We now have dozens of books in our app to select from, and we can listen to them over and over again. This is especially great for building seasonal and holiday collections.</li>
<li><strong>The return process is great. </strong>I have only had to do this a few times, but returning a book to Audible is really easy to do. There have been a few times when I either didn&#8217;t care for the narrator after all, or we were not enjoying the story. All I had to do was return the book online and my credit was refunded, no hassle.</li>
<li><strong>There are always sales</strong>. In addition to the credit(s) you get each month, you can also always find lots of audiobooks on sale, usually for less than $5. This is another great way to slowly build your listening library. I would recommend signing up for <a href="https://amongstlovelythings.com/audible-deals/">Sarah Mackenzie&#8217;s emails</a> to alert you of Audible sales. (P.S. You don&#8217;t have to have a subscription to take advantage of the sales!)</li>
</ol>
<h3><strong>HOW TO GET FREE AUDIOBOOKS</strong></h3>
<p>You can also get audiobooks for free from these sources. Each one has it&#8217;s advantages and disadvantages, but the benefit is that you&#8217;re getting them for free! I think perhaps the biggest things to note is that with each one your selection is a little more limited and you often need to wait on books, and like the library, you don&#8217;t keep the books you listen to.</p>

<h2>Our Favorite Audiobooks</h2>
<p><strong>My plan with this list to keep updating it with new titles as we listen, along with short snippets of reviews and recommendations.</strong> It will be a great place to come back to again and again for new audiobook ideas, so pin it or save it for future reference!</p>
<p>The books in this list are ones that we have listened to unless otherwise noted. We have listened to many of them over and over. I would love to know some of your favorite audiobooks too, so please share them in the comments!</p>
<h3>AUDIOBOOKS FOR KIDS/THE WHOLE FAMILY</h3>
<p><strong>Short Stories </strong></p>
<ul>
<li><a href="https://amzn.to/2A5LVwz" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>Rikki Tikki Tavi</strong></a>, Rudyard Kipling  <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> <em>(less than $5) </em>This is a wonderful, classic story that keeps kids captivated. It is short enough to listen to in one sitting. This is one we listen to frequently.</li>
<li><a href="https://amzn.to/3d7qVEF" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>The Book of Dragons</strong></a>, Edith Nesbit <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><em> (less than $10) </em>Several short stories make up this collection. The stories are odd and interesting, and make you think. This is another one we go back to often.</li>
<li><a href="http://amzn.to/2gNDR6k" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>Children of Noisy Village</strong></a>, Astrid Lindgren <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><em> </em>We LOVE this book and have listened to it several times. The stories of the children are sweet and funny, and my kids laugh out loud.</li>
<li><a href="https://amzn.to/2zcsUsA" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>Pippi Longstocking</strong></a> , Astrid Lindgren <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> My kids loooooove Pippi and could (and do) listen to this story over and over.</li>
<li><a href="https://amzn.to/3e5gSQc" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare</strong></a>, Edith Nesbit <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> <em>(less than $5)</em>I am using these to introduce my kids (and often myself) to Shakespeare. The stories are short and easy to listen to multiple times to help kids become familiar with the stories.</li>
<li><a href="http://amzn.to/2xUbCuG" target="_blank" rel="false noopener noreferrer"><strong>The Peter Rabbit Collection</strong></a>, Beatrice Potter <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> A collection of 23 of Beatrice Potter&#8217;s stories and nursery rhymes. Great for younger children. My children often like to listen to this collection while they go to sleep.</li>
<li><a href="http://amzn.to/2eLmEdo" target="_blank" rel="false noopener noreferrer"><strong>Mrs. Piggle Wiggle</strong></a>, Betty MacDonald <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> A humorous, fun to listen to, classic.</li>
<li><a href="https://amzn.to/36n8YPx" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>My Father&#8217;s Dragon</strong></a>, Ruth Stiles Gannett <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> <em>(less than $1)</em></li>

We all listened to this one, including my husband, before the movie came out. As we listened, I was so glad I didn&#8217;t have to read all of Dahl&#8217;s nonsense words! We have already listened to it twice more since then.</li>

This book is full of good boyish fun that expertly works in lessons in character and life. It&#8217;s not only instructive and enjoyable for kids, but is also incredibly valuable for a mom of boys to learn from. Which is why I try to play it about twice a year.</li>

<li><a href="https://amzn.to/3gci3zi" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>Love Without Borders</strong></a>, Angela Braniff <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> I LOVED this memoir by one of my favorite mamas to follow online. She shares her story of faith, infertility, adoption, and so much more with a perfect mix of humor, compassion, and wisdom. Highly recommend.</li>
<li><a href="https://amzn.to/2WTOxXt" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>Life-Giving Home</strong></a>, Sally Clarkson <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> This would be better if I loved the narrator, however, I did enjoy listening to chapters of this book while tackling things around the house. It was the perfect inspiration and motivation!</li>
<li><a href="https://amzn.to/3ggRsB2" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>Parenting</strong></a>, Paul David Tripp <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> I love anything Paul Tripp writes, and this book is no exception. Finding time to read it was difficult this year, but listening to Sarah read her words herself was a great encouragement while I worked away at <a href="https://thispilgrimlife.com/organized-homeschool-space-dining-room/" rel="false">preparing our homeschool area</a> and <a href="https://thispilgrimlife.com/free-printables-planning-morning-time/" rel="false">creating plans</a>.</li>

This is an excellent listen for anyone needing fresh inspiration and motivation in homeschooling.</li>

<h3>AUDIOBOOKS FOR ADULTS</h3>
<ul>
<li><a href="https://amzn.to/3bWLQst" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>The Pursuit of Holiness</strong></a>, Jerry Bridges <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> I bought this book because our women&#8217;s group at church was going through it. Keeping up with the reading was difficult until I started listening instead. It&#8217;s a great book.</li>
<li><a href="https://amzn.to/2AQej6l" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>Dad is Fat</strong></a>, Jim Gaffigan <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/2665.png" alt="♥" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> I LOVE this book. Jim Gaffigan reads it himself, and it is so lighthearted and hilarious. My one caveat is that it is not one that I listen to while my kids are around because they can&#8217;t quite understand the self-deprecating humor.</li>
<li><a href="https://amzn.to/2zYBpY3" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>Food: A Love Story</strong></a>, Jim Gaffigan Another really funny listen about various types of food and regions around the country they are found in.</li>

Highly recommend if you are a fan of the show.</li>

<p>Last night I was reading one of our family&#8217;s favorite books to the kids before bedtime. Whenever I read it, they hang on every word. <strong>We have read this story probably a dozen times, but they still ask for it again and again. </strong></p>
<p>It&#8217;s not only them, though. Every single time I read this story to my children, I am encouraged, convicted, or usually both. So it&#8217;s no wonder that I&#8217;m a pushover when they ask for another chapter.</p>
<p>Do you want to know how to make reading aloud to your kids a regular habit? <strong>One of the most effective ways to stay consistent is to read books that everyone (including the parents!) wants to read.</strong></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-14462" src="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Pilgrims-Progress.jpg" alt="" width="700" height="427" srcset="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Pilgrims-Progress.jpg 700w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Pilgrims-Progress-600x366.jpg 600w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Pilgrims-Progress-300x183.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></p>
<p>Curious what we were reading last night? We were reading <a href="https://amzn.to/2V5AXjD" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dangerous Journey</a>, a picture book copy of one of our favorite stories&#8211; Pilgrim&#8217;s Progress.</p>
<p>John Bunyan wrote Pilgrim&#8217;s Progress from a jail cell in 1676. Certainly he was inspired and gifted by the Holy Spirit because <strong>Pilgrim&#8217;s Progress has been one of the most widely translated, most widely loved, and most enduring books ever. </strong></p>
<h2>Four Reasons You Should Read Pilgrim&#8217;s Progress As a Family</h2>
<ol>
<li><strong>Pilgrim&#8217;s Progress is one of the most widely read books of time.</strong> I&#8217;m not one to tell you to jump on the bandwagon, but in this case, that&#8217;s what I&#8217;m doing. This book is a classic for a reason and is definitely worth reading.</li>
<li><strong>Pilgrim&#8217;s Progress is an easily understandable, relatable, and accurate description of the Christian life.</strong> John Bunyan drew on his vast understanding of the Bible and human nature to write this allegory. The illustrations, characters, and lessons in the book are applicable to all ages and at all times.</li>
<li>Reading Pilgrim&#8217;s Progress (and other Bible stories, myths, legends, etc*) will <strong>help you to better understand and recognize the numerous references</strong> to this classic allegory in other literature, music, movies, and so on.</li>
<li><strong>Spending time reading Pilgrim&#8217;s Progress together as a family will provide countless opportunities to discuss Biblical themes and common struggles with your children</strong>. Moreover, as you all learn the story and take it to heart, you will find yourself referencing Bunyan&#8217;s words and lessons in everyday conversations and hard discussions.</li>
</ol>
<p>Convinced to put Pilgrim&#8217;s Progress on your &#8220;To-Read&#8221; list? Here are five ways to introduce the story to your family.</p>
<h1>Five Ways to &#8220;Read&#8221; Pilgrim&#8217;s Progress as a Family</h1>
<h2>1. As a picture book.</h2>
<p><a href="https://amzn.to/2XkvJy5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-14455 size-medium" src="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.14.37-AM-300x298.png" alt="" width="300" height="298" srcset="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.14.37-AM-300x298.png 300w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.14.37-AM-100x100.png 100w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.14.37-AM-600x596.png 600w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.14.37-AM-150x150.png 150w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.14.37-AM-768x763.png 768w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.14.37-AM.png 1024w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a></p>
<p><strong>I can&#8217;t recommend <a href="https://amzn.to/2XkvJy5" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dangerous Journey</a> enough. </strong>Dangerous Journey is a picture book with beautiful, engaging illustrations that your children will love. What&#8217;s more, the story uses selections of John Bunyan&#8217;s original words in a way that is accessible for all ages. I am always encouraged when I read this to my children, and they are always begging for just one more chapter!</p>
<h2>2. As an adapted children&#8217;s version.</h2>
<p><a href="https://amzn.to/2DehPWI" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-14456 size-medium" src="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.15.51-AM-193x300.png" alt="" width="193" height="300" srcset="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.15.51-AM-193x300.png 193w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.15.51-AM-600x934.png 600w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.15.51-AM-768x1195.png 768w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.15.51-AM-658x1024.png 658w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.15.51-AM.png 771w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 193px) 100vw, 193px" /></a></p>
<p><a href="https://amzn.to/2DehPWI" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>Little Pilgrim&#8217;s Progress</strong></a><strong> is the classic story of Pilgrim, but written from the perspective of a child</strong> setting out for the Celestial City. It&#8217;s not a replacement for the original, but it is a well-written and faithful adaptation that can be great as a longer introduction of Pilgrim&#8217;s Progress for younger children.</p>
<p>You can also get <a href="https://amzn.to/2UnMxCm" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Little Pilgrim&#8217;s Progess in audiobook</a> format.</p>
<h2>3. As an audiobook.</h2>
<p><a href="https://amzn.to/2XgsIic" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-14457 size-medium" src="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.20.54-AM-298x300.png" alt="" width="298" height="300" srcset="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.20.54-AM-298x300.png 298w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.20.54-AM-100x100.png 100w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.20.54-AM-150x150.png 150w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.20.54-AM.png 494w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 298px) 100vw, 298px" /></a></p>
<p><strong>This is the <a href="https://amzn.to/2XgsIic" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">audiobook version that we have</a> so I can recommend the reader</strong> (so important with an audiobook!). It is the unabridged original story. We often will turn it on in the car or in the house. Once you know the story fairly well, you can listen to small sections and benefit just as much.</p>
<h2>4. As an animated movie.</h2>
<p><a href="https://www.pilgrims.movie"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-14458" src="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.23.45-AM-300x171.png" alt="" width="300" height="171" srcset="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.23.45-AM-300x171.png 300w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.23.45-AM-600x341.png 600w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.23.45-AM-768x437.png 768w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.23.45-AM.png 1024w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.23.45-AM-700x400.png 700w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a></p>
<p><strong>I am very excited about <a href="https://www.pilgrims.movie" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">this animated Pilgrim&#8217;s Progress movie</a></strong>! We added it to our <a href="https://amzn.to/2xruLrV" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">video library</a> and have watched it several times. It is also <a href="https://www.revelationmedia.com/watchpilgrims/FB/?fbclid=IwAR2K2WbfXAVYx8KdOBgJpVZq2zAxb0_KxXP8WWd20HYrWNnMdmER0KrXIVg" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">currently available to stream for free online</a>!</p>
<p>While I hope that this movie serves as a way for a wide audience to benefit from John Bunyan&#8217;s story, <strong>I definitely do not think it is a sufficient substitute for the written work.</strong> Hopefully after seeing the movie, people will be more interested in reading the book and enjoying the story in its entirety.</p>
<h2>5. Read the original.</h2>
<p><a href="https://amzn.to/2IpxvKE" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-14459" src="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.29.40-AM-198x300.png" alt="" width="300" height="455" srcset="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.29.40-AM-198x300.png 198w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.29.40-AM-600x909.png 600w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.29.40-AM-768x1164.png 768w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.29.40-AM-676x1024.png 676w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Screen-Shot-2019-04-16-at-11.29.40-AM.png 792w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a></p>
<p>Of course, once you get a taste and an introduction to the story, I think everyone should read the original in one form or another! <strong><a href="https://amzn.to/2IpxvKE" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">This version is updated</a> in modern English and has over 100 illustrations. </strong></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-8324 size-medium" src="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/border-leaf-300x85.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="85" srcset="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/border-leaf-300x85.jpg 300w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/border-leaf-600x170.jpg 600w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/border-leaf-768x218.jpg 768w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/border-leaf.jpg 800w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
<h2><em>Have you read Pilgrim&#8217;s Progress as a family? What is your favorite way to &#8220;read&#8221; it? </em></h2>

<p>You do not have to have a curriculum to homeschool your children, but a good curriculum has the potential to make homeschooling much easier and more beautiful. This year I changed things up a bit and opted to stop using an all-in-one boxed curriculum, and instead piece together different curriculum components myself.</p>
<p>I intended on sharing our homeschool curriculum choices earlier this year, but I have been so busy teaching through it! It&#8217;s actually just given us the opportunity to wet our feet before sharing. I can now tell you that we are loving all our curriculum choices!</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-13433" src="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Homeschool-2018.4.jpg" alt="" width="700" height="933" srcset="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Homeschool-2018.4.jpg 700w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Homeschool-2018.4-600x800.jpg 600w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Homeschool-2018.4-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></p>

<p>My children are in third grade, first grade, and preschool this year. (Plus a toddler and a baby!) About half their lessons are independent from one another, and the other half we do together as a family.</p>
<p>Keep reading for a few more details on what I chose for each child. I didn&#8217;t go too deep into each one, because that would make this post exceptionally long. But I shared links for each one.<strong> I also just <a href="https://youtu.be/DrsVKZa7_dg" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">shared a video discussing each one on YouTube</a> if you want to check out that video. (I would love for you to join me there!)</strong></p>
<p>I also plan on sharing our daily rhythm this year&#8211; how we are getting lessons done for three children with two smaller children besides&#8211; but I couldn&#8217;t fit it in this post. I will share it another time soon!</p>
<h1>What we are using for curriculum this year ::</h1>

<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-13436" src="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Homeschool-2018.13.jpg" alt="" width="700" height="933" srcset="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Homeschool-2018.13.jpg 700w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Homeschool-2018.13-600x800.jpg 600w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Homeschool-2018.13-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></p>
<h2>Third Grade</h2>
<p>This is our second year using Math Lessons for a Living Education. We all really enjoyed the story-based lessons last year, and I really appreciated both the low-cost and the fact that everything is in just one book. All the lessons are related to real-life. There is also a manipulative section in the back of the book.</p>
<p>Other than math, though, everything we are using for my oldest is new this year. The entirety of his language arts curriculum is from Simply Charlotte Mason. After looking at many different options and listening the recommendations of friends, I settled on these books. You can watch videos on the SCM website to get a closer look at each component.</p>
<p>MATH: <a href="https://amzn.to/2qzglzu" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>Math Lessons for a Living Education, Level 3</strong></a></p>
<p>LANGUAGE ARTS:</p>

<h2>First Grade</h2>
<p>My six-year-old is finishing up the second half of My Father&#8217;s World&#8217;s reading program this year. He started with kindergarten last year and I wanted to preserve the continuity in his lessons this year, so we are using only the language arts component of the MFW curriculum this year.</p>
<p>My Father&#8217;s World is an all-inclusive curriculum. We used it for my older son in kindergarten, first, and second grade so we already have all the teacher books. I like how reading is taught and will likely continue to just order the student sheets each year for whomever is in kindergarten or first grade.</p>
<p>One downside to My Father&#8217;s World can definitely be the cost, which is why this year we are not continuing with the family plan (MFW has plans for teaching similar curriculum to all your students).</p>
<p>MATH: <a href="https://amzn.to/2DqDFI5" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>Math Lessons for a Living Education, Level 2</strong></a></p>

<h2>Preschool</h2>
<p>This is the first year I have ever purchased a preschool curriculum. Usually, I would just do some Target dollar spot workbooks, play learning games, and read a lot. However, I wanted to have something a little more structured this year since my daughter would be joining us at the table for lessons everyday.</p>
<p>I follow Jennifer Pepito on Instagram, and have seen pictures of her curriculum for a few years now. (She has a lot more than just preschool). Her preschool curriculum is very reasonably priced being that you simply download and print it. I love the structure, organization, and variety of activities included.</p>

<h2>All Together</h2>
<p>Other than math and language arts, a majority of our lessons are done together. The Enrichment Studies is currently taking the place of me needing to plan out our morning time since it included all the morning time components already in its plans.</p>

<h1>Free Printables</h1>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-13437 size-full" src="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Homeschool-Printables.jpg" alt="We are a homeschooling family with five kids eight and under! See what we are using this year for homeschool curriculum in third grade, first grade, and preschool. Plus, get free printables to help you keep your homeschool days organized and on track! " width="700" height="525" srcset="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Homeschool-Printables.jpg 700w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Homeschool-Printables-600x450.jpg 600w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Homeschool-Printables-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></p>
<p>These two printables help keep me on track each week. With so many &#8220;interruptions&#8221; and various lessons and everything else, being able to look and see what we need to do next, and what we have already finished is lifesaving. I print these pages out as needed and keep them together on my clipboard.</p>
<p>(I also keep a laminated copy of our daily rhythm, my master lunch ideas and dinner ideas lists, our current meal plan page, and a laminated copy of my Costco/Aldi price list on this clipboard. It is a very important clipboard!)</p>
<p><strong>WEEK AT A GLANCE :: </strong></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-13444" src="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Screen-Shot-2018-11-07-at-12.05.37-AM-832x1024.png" alt="" width="700" height="862" srcset="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Screen-Shot-2018-11-07-at-12.05.37-AM-832x1024.png 832w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Screen-Shot-2018-11-07-at-12.05.37-AM-600x738.png 600w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Screen-Shot-2018-11-07-at-12.05.37-AM-244x300.png 244w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Screen-Shot-2018-11-07-at-12.05.37-AM-768x945.png 768w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Screen-Shot-2018-11-07-at-12.05.37-AM.png 975w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></p>
<p>This Week At A Glance page helps me to see an overview of everything included in that week&#8217;s plans for each of my kids. With having so many different teacher books and lesson plans, I wanted a way to have it all together. Filling in this page at the beginning of the week also really helps me to know what I need to do to prepare for the week&#8211; whether that is book we need, craft supplies that need to be pulled out, etc.</p>
<p>You can see a picture of my Week At A Glance above, but I also included a blank copy for you to download and use. Just fill in the boxes with your child(ren)&#8217;s names and their lessons.</p>

<p><strong>DAILY CHECKLIST :: </strong></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-13443" src="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Screen-Shot-2018-11-07-at-12.05.13-AM-825x1024.png" alt="" width="700" height="870" srcset="https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Screen-Shot-2018-11-07-at-12.05.13-AM-825x1024.png 825w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Screen-Shot-2018-11-07-at-12.05.13-AM-600x745.png 600w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Screen-Shot-2018-11-07-at-12.05.13-AM-242x300.png 242w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Screen-Shot-2018-11-07-at-12.05.13-AM-768x954.png 768w, https://thispilgrimlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Screen-Shot-2018-11-07-at-12.05.13-AM.png 966w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></p>
<p>My Daily Checklist is SO helpful to have on hand. I do not expect to do every single item on the list each day, but I can check off what we do accomplish. Then, at the end of the day, or at the end of a week, I can look back and see what still needs to be done, or areas we may be missing too frequently.</p>
<p>The Daily Checklist is also super handy in the middle of the day when I have had to pause lessons to take care of something/someone else. My mom brain means I am liable to forget completely what we already did. A quick skim of the checklist helps me see where we need to pick back up.</p>
<p>Again, you can see our daily checklist above, but I also created a blank one for you to use as well. Just download the checklist, add in your family&#8217;s lessons and tasks, and print.</p>

<p>All of this makes for a busy day, but I truly love teaching my children and cherish the time we have together. Our curriculum choices this year are certainly a part of making homeschool enjoyable for us all.</p>
<p><strong>I would love to hear what curriculum you use and how you came to use it. Comment below and share your favorites. Do we use any of the same books? I&#8217;d love to hear from you! </strong></p>
