What better way to start the first week of October with a delicious, warm, and filling breakfast recipe???!!

Steel cut oats are one of our go-to breakfasts during the cooler months. We love the heartiness of the oatmeal (compared to old-fashioned or quick oats), and my kids love being able to add their own toppings. I usually just pull out a bunch of jars and take them to the table to make our bowls.

I used to make steel cut oats on the stovetop (and you still can using this recipe), but I have to say, I LOVE how easy the Instant Pot makes cooking steel cut oats. It really is as simple as dump, cook, and serve. No baby-sitting required. I can start our coffee, start our oatmeal, and leave the kitchen.

It’s life-changing, I tell you!

(In fact, I would almost go so far as to say that I would buy an Instant Pot just to make steel cut oats all fall and winter. It really is that simple. AND you totally could too, because the Instant Pot is on sale today for $30 off!).

In continuing the week of apple recipes, I’m sharing a version of steel cut oats that we really enjoy. It tastes just like fall and the chunks of apples are a great addition to the oats.

I prefer to use a sweeter apple, usually gala, in this dish, but you can use the apple of your choice. Peeling or not is up to you too. Don’t you just love being able to follow your own preferences in recipes? 😉

It’s worth noting, that even though the steel cut oats only have to cook for 3 minutes under pressure, you also need to take into account the time it takes to come to pressure (about 10-15 minutes), and a 10 minute natural release. As long as you start the oats first thing, you can leave them in the pot without touching them until you’re ready to eat.

Also worth noting, steel cut oats can get expensive in the store if you are eating them regularly. We like to order a 25lb bag of organic steel cut oats off Amazon (delivered right to my door! #winning). It will last us all season, but you could also go in with a friend and split the bag if you’re worried it’s too much. I freeze the oats in gallon ziplock bags and refill a large mason jar as needed.

Description

Steel cut oats in the Instant Pot are so easy to prepare and make a wonderfully warm and filling breakfast! Give plain oats a fragrant, sweet twist with spices and chopped apples!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/3 C steel cut oats
  • 4 C water
  • 1 (heaping) tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp all-spice
  • 2 apples, chopped

Instructions

  1. Combine all the ingredients in the Instant Pot liner. Stir to incorporate, then cover and seal.
  2. Cook for 3 minutes on high pressure. Let the pressure naturally release for ten minutes (this helps to give the oatmeal more time to thicken and set up).
  3. Serve with additional toppings of your choice. (We like maple syrup, grass-fed butter, and chopped pecans).

Notes

*Allow for about 10 minutes for the pot to come to pressure.

  1. I love this recipe but the last two times I’ve made it the burn notice has come on. I wonder if it is the oats themselves or if I need more water.

  2. This is a great recipe! I subbed applesauce for apples because it’s what I had on hand & it turned out great! We eat oatmeal 3-4 times a week and my kids said this was “the best they ever had.” Will be making again!! **it is also super handy that the time to come to pressure is included**

  3. I’m not sure this could have gone worse. I have oatmeal soup & the oats are no where near cooked thoroughly. Followed recipe exactly as it states. Reviewed my steps to make sure I didn’t screw up before leaving this review. Smells great though.

    1. I’m sorry that it did not turn out for you Krystie. Can I ask a couple of questions? What kind of oats did you use? Did you let the pressure naturally release?
Again, I’m sorry it was runny. Just asking because we have oatmeal multiple times a week like this.

  4. One of my fav recipes! I had never tried steel cut oats before. This is very yummy and I love that it suggests maple syrup to sweeten. That is how I have it and it is so, so good!

  5. Love this! We didn’t even need to add sugar after coming and the kids an husband ate it up! I want to make this in an larger portion when family is in town.

Have you doubled or tripled this? Does it change the amount of liquid or cook time?

  6. This was so good! I wanted to make it a second time but I had no apples, ground cinnamon or allspice left. ..1x/mo paydays.. arrgh!!… SO necessity being the mother of invention I raised my pantry and freezer and found a lone cinnamon stick and some frozen bananas…mmmhm like a warm banana bread with a pat of butter and the last of my Penzeys Cinnamon Sugar blending top……. heavenly!

  7. We change up our steel cut oats pretty often but this is where we started and where we got hooked on eating our oats daily!!! Awesome recipe!
