Last week I shared ten tips for keeping kids in church. I will not go into all the benefits and tips again, but I was reminded yesterday during the sermon how much our kids pick up on even when it seems like they are not listening.

During the sermon, my husband (the pastor) was sharing the parable of the wedding feast in which the king sent out his servant into the village to invite guests to come to his feast. As my husband was retelling how the village people were too busy or uninterested, he asked a rhetorical question about why they would not want to come. My son piped up and said that he would want to go, of course he’d want to go!

This was not a rare incident, either. And as our children get older, we want to be more intentional about teaching them to pay attention. Because even if a large part of the sermon is missed by them, there is still a great benefit of training our children to participate in the service, hold worship and preaching in high esteem, and begin to process and put into practice what they hear in the sermon.

Recently I made the kids in our church books for them to use during the sermon, and I wanted to make them available to you too.

There are simple questions to fill in at the top, like the date and where the sermon text is found. Below that is a place to copy a verse from the text into their books. The Charlotte Mason homeschooler in me knows the value of copywork.

There is also a place to write down words and phrases they heard, draw a picture of something in the sermon, as well as two questions to answer each week.

The pages are adaptable for various ages. For example, yesterday I wrote the verse out for my younger son to trace, and told him to draw a picture after he copied the verse. Older children can fill out the pages themselves.

I am also encouraging the families in our church (and myself!) to review the sermon text and the questions sometime after the sermon with their children. Having a discussion about what each text teaches us about God, and how we can all be doers of the word is profitable for everyone!

I made our books to be folded in half, with a piece of construction paper for a cover. On the first day, I gave the children a cover page for them to write their name and color the title, then I took them back home to laminate the covers and staple the books together.

(I highly suggest laminating the pages if possible! I have this laminator and use it all the time!)

Below you will find a PDF version of the cover page, and the note pages. I have included a PDF of the note pages with two on a page, and a full-size version if you prefer to make a larger book.

  1. How many pages are in each booklet? With the covers laminated, it would seem to me that the book would need to have multiple pages for example a month’s worth or enough for a series worth of lessons.
