I rather dread going to Wal-Mart.

But it is one of the handful of grocery stores near our country home. And when my shopping list includes things like bias tape and felt, I am thankful even for Wal-Mart.

Yesterday I found myself with such a list and so I packed the kids up in the van for what was supposed to be a quick trips for a few needed items.

We breezed through the food aisles picking up fun things like bacon, eggs, and flour (you know, the essentials). Then I steered the kids towards the craft department. I’m familiar with what is where so in under ten minutes, the listed items were in our cart.

However, I needed some material cut so we weren’t quite ready to leave.

I waited at the cutting counter for a few minutes. Trying to look simultaneously like I really wanted someone to help me SOON and like I was capable of waiting patiently with three small children with nothing to do.

The boys actually did find something to do. In the ten foot radius surrounding the cutting counter, they found dinosaur magnets, (with open mouths– an important feature to my two-year-old), and Frozen dolls. Sorry parents of sweet little girls who loooove Frozen. Elsa and Anna fell prey to the vicious meat-eating dinosaurs.

While my boys played Animal Planet meets Disney behind me, my baby reminded me that in my haste to run our quick errand, I had neglected to nurse her after her nap. By crying.

During this time, several employees walked by, chatting or pushing carts of items to restock. One employee paged help in the craft department. But help never came.

Thirty minutes later, I left to hunt down help from another department.

I had considered just putting the material down and leaving. Except I really wanted this flannel fabric.

So glad I waited.

This scarf is a really quick project with just five easy steps. Perfect for anyone who is just getting started sewing. A breeze for experienced sewers.

Make it. Gift it. Wear it.

Flannel Infinity Scarf

Materials: 

• 1 yard cotton flannel
• coordinating thread

Instructions:

1. Cut 4 pieces from the cotton flannel, 28″ x 7″. (Tip: fold the flannel so you can cut all four pieces at once).

To make a scarf in a toddler size, cut 4 pieces 25″ x 5″. Continue following the directions below. 

2. Take two of the flannel pieces and lay them down right sides together. Sew along one of the short sides with a 1/2 inch seam. Repeat with the other two pieces. Press the seam flat.

 

3. Lay the two long pieces down right sides together. Starting at the end of one long side, sew around both long sides and one short side. Leave the second short side open for turning.

4. Turn the scarf right-side out and press, pulling the seams out with your fingers as you do.

5. On the open end of the scarf, fold the edge down 1/2 inch and press. Tuck in about a half-inch of the other end and line it up so the side seams are lined up. Check to be sure the scarf did not get twisted but forms a loop. Sew along the short side, close to the folded edge. (Or, you can hand-sew the seam closed if you don’t want to see the stitches. It’s just personal preference).

 

Finished!

Loop it around your neck twice to wear. Marvel at how easy it was and make another one for a cute baby or toddler in your life!
